Genk go tough on fans who racially abuse Arokodare after missing penalty

Belgian club Genk said the police has been called in to track their fans who racially abused striker Tolu Arokodare after he missed a penalty against Club Brugge.

Genk lost 3-0 at home to Club Brugge at the weekend and the fans could not hold back their frustration after Arokodare missed a penalty that would have given the host team the lead after just 18 minutes of action.

He later said on social media that he was racially abused online.

Gent issued a strongly-worded statement condemning the fans.

“After the match against Club Brugge, Tolu received a series of racist reactions on social media,” the club said.

“KRC Genk and everyone involved in the club condemn the reactions 100%. Racism has no place in football stadiums, not on social media, anywhere. Unfortunately, it is still deeply rooted in football and by extension in society as a whole.”

A complaint is being filed with the authorities, the club said.

“It is a shared responsibility to put a stop to this. As a club, we are doing everything we can to track down those responsible and report them to the police,” they reported.

The player himself confronted the racists by saying he’s “black and proud”.
