Why Eguavoen insists on struggling Iheanacho

Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen has defended his invitation of Kelechi Iheanacho for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers even though he has struggled at his new Spanish club Sevilla.

Iheanacho has been picked ahead of Tolu Arokodare, who is leading scorer in Belgium; Josh Maja is top scorer in the English Championship; Jerome Akor is scoring goals for French club Montpellier and Cyriel Dessers has been prolific at Scottish club Rangers.

“I decided to include Kelechi Iheanacho of Sevilla when it became clear Victor Osimhen would not be fit in time,” Eguavoen told Afrikfoot

“I looked at both Cyriel Dessers and Tolu Arokodare, but opted for Kelechi this time because he is the more experienced striker.”

Iheanacho, 28, made his Super Eagles debut in November 2015 and has scored 15 goals in 55 appearances.
