What is the verdict on Finidi as Super Eagles coach?

Finidi George has on the back of a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Ghana gained more support to lead the Super Eagles just as some are still not convinced he is the coach to lift Nigeria to glory.

On Friday, the Super Eagles under Finidi delivered a direct, attacking style of football to beat the Black Stars of Ghana in a friendly in Morocco.

It was a sharp departure from the defensive football that got Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON.

What is the verdict on Finidi as Super Eagles coach?

The Super Eagles players have already thrown their weight behind the former Ajax winger.

“He has done a fantastic job within such a short space of time, hopefully he will get more chances to prove himself,” said Kelechi Iheanacho.

Cyriel Dessers scored the first goal of Finidi’s bow as Eagles boss against Ghana.

“He had a clear approach to this game – press aggressive and create more chances in this manner and I think we did that,” said the Rangers striker.

“I think he knows everything about the team. He has been part of us, so it is not going to be difficult for him to lead the team,” added Portugal-based defender Chidozie Awaziem.

“I hope we will have a good run with him.”

Enyimba striker Chijoke Mbaoma is the leading scorer in the NPFL with 12 goals and he will also back Finidi for Super Eagles top job.

“It won’t be easy, but Finidi will deliver as Super Eagles coach because he has a positive spirit. He is a living legend and I like playing for him,” he endorsed.

Kelechi Nweke, a fan, said he was impressed with the football the Super Eagles played against Ghana and that should be to the credit of Finidi.

“Besides the result, I like the flair the players showed in the game, the boys moved the ball nicely and strung good passes together. That’s what a Nigerian team is known for and they trained together for only a few days,” he said.

However, Ayo Akinfe said that despite the good football and the win he will not appoint Finidi to head the Super Eagles.

“Well done to Finidi for this, but I will still not gamble on him. Nigeria cannot afford to play kalo-kalo with our World Cup chances,” he insisted.

“We need a tried and tested coach like Herve Renard, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp, Guardiola, Zidane, etc.

“Finidi can be his assistant. We cannot risk missing two World Cups in a row.”
