Sports director opens up on Amoo bizarre transfer

Sports Director Jesper Jansson has opened up for the first time on the most bizarre transfer of highly promising Akinkunmi Amoo to Cyprus after he was convicted of rape in Denmark.

The former Sports Director of Hammarby and FC Copenhagen said Amoo was abandoned with “nowhere to go” after the conviction, which the player has since appealed against.

Jansson told Fotbollskanalen: “This is a guy who we brought to Hammarby from Africa when he was 18 years old. We had also followed him for a long time, and now many turned their backs on him. I could say that it was my personal responsibility (to help).

“He was in a very terrible position, and that’s how the discussion started. Somehow he had nowhere to go. It’s an ongoing thing, and he had been injured and needed somewhere to start. It was more on a personal level.”

Jansson has since been sacked by the Cypriot club, while Amoo mutually terminated his own contract with the club for “personal reasons”.
