SCORENigeria Top 5: Super Eagles new boys Arokodare, Chrisantus Uche shine

Both Chrisantus Uche and Tolu Arokodare are being considered by the Super Eagles and at the weekend they enhanced their chances of making the final cut for next month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers after outstanding displays for their clubs.

5.Tolu Arokodare

The big striker is again the leading scorer in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League after he delivered the winning goal for Genk to win 2-1 at Standard Liege. He now has 15 goals and his club are eight points clear at the top of the table with 60 points from 26 matches. His 15-goal tally matches his all-time career highest in Europe when he scored same number of goals for Valmeira in the Latvian league. This explains why he is now on the radar of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle and he is being tipped for a transfer to a major league in the summer.

4.Sadiq Umar

The Super Eagles striker scored his first La Liga goal to save Valencia from defeat at Villarreal. It was a precious away draw for Valencia. They remain in the relegation zone, but are now only goals’ difference away from safety. However, they face a tough home game at the weekend when they welcome title chasers Atletico Madrid.

3.Chrisantus Uche

The combative striker or midfielder scored his third goal in La Liga for Getafe to win 2-1 at Girona. Unfortunately, he will miss his team’s Sunday Showdown against Real Betis after he also picked up his fifth booking of the season. It was an important win for the Madrid club, who climbed to 13th position with 30 points from 24 matches. They are now five points behind fifth-placed Rayo Vallecano, who are in the UEFA Europa League qualification bracket.

2.Calvin Bassey

The Super Eagles defender was the unlikely match winner for Fulham against high-flying Nottingham Forest. He headed home from a corner for his London club to climb to eighth place in the Premier League. The 25-year-old central defender has now scored a goal in his last three seasons. Do not bet against him improving on this tally this season going by the superb run of Fulham.

1.George Ilenikhena

The Lagos-born striker  announced his return from injury with a brace as AS Monaco dismantled FC Nantes 7-1 in the French Ligue 1. Ilenikhena has been sidelined by a groin injury by a month. He was introduced in the home game to fire two late goals. The 18-year-old striker, who is eligible to play for Nigeria, has now netted three goals in 17 appearances. Monaco are now fourth in the standings with 40 points from 22 matches.
