Several top officials have told SCORENigeria that Augustine Eguavoen will continue as coach of the Super Eagles pending the appointment of a foreign coach.
This comes at a time when one of his former assistants and former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo endorsed his retention.
Eguavoen will therefore be in charge of the Eagles for a 2025 AFCON double-header against Libya next month.
He has already led the team to beat Benin 3-0 and hold hosts Rwanda to scoreless draw to begin the qualifying campaign for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
“Eguavoen remains in charge of the Super Eagles until a foreign coach is appointed,” a top official disclosed.
“Speculations that the NFF and Bruno Labbadia have sorted out their differences are not true.
“Labbadia will not be the next Super Eagles coach.”
Another official informed SCORENigeria that the NFF are still shopping for another foreign coach, but for the time being Eguavoen will lead the national team.
Yobo, who assisted Eguavoen at both the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and the 2022 World Cup playoffs against Ghana, said the Eagles are back on track with Eguavoen in charge of the team.
“We’re on the right track, we played two games and we did not concede,” he said.
“The players responded to him by their performance. Everybody brought out their best, we were unlucky not to win in Rwanda.
“He’s a very respected coach, a gentleman who makes tough decision. A good coach and good manager
“We need a coach like him. He brings the best out of the players.
“We should support him, he gives his best for everything he does.”
This is the fourth stint as Super Eagles coach for Eguavoen, who is also the NFF technical director.
