A senior official has informed only SCORENigeria that some major steps will be taken by the NFF “in the coming days” as it concerns the appointment of a new coach for the Super Eagles.
Delay in the appointment of a new coach for the country’s team has stretched the patience of the public with just three weeks to an opening 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin in Uyo.
However, after the speculations and uncertainties that have attended the choice of a new coach, a top official has now told SCORENigeria a clear direction will be known “in the coming days”.
“The decisions of the NFF on a new coach will be made known in the coming days,” the official disclosed without further elaboration.
The NFF leadership has been in close contact with three of the shortlisted foreign coaches, namely Herve Renard, Eric Chelle and Tom Saintfiet.
The other shortlisted coach, Steve McClaren, has since opted to take over Jamaica.
While Chelle and Saintfiet are affordable, Renard is not.
There have also been suggestions of appointing an interim coach for at least the AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda before a final decision is taken on a substantive coach.
NFF technical director Augustine Eguavoen is the favourite to step in as a caretaker coach as he did so three years ago when Gernot Rohr was fired.
However, it is left to be seen whether he will be interested in taking up this huge responsibility again.
