EXCLUSIVE: NPFL consider abridged new league season

Top officials are mulling an abridged format of the NPFL for next season, but may again be met with a stiff resistance by the clubs, SCORENigeria understands.

The officials favour a shortened format to reduce mounting costs of logistics due to the removal of fuel subsidy, road accidents and other incidents clubs suffer to play a full-fixture league.

The previous season won by Enyimba was abridged with the Northern and Southern Conferences made up of 10 clubs each with the top six teams playing off for the championship at a designated venue.

Most of the clubs kicked against this because they will be under added pressure to stay up as they may not be able to make up for a run of poor results.

With the majority of these clubs owned by state governments, an abridged season will also mean a reduced budget from the sponsors.

The curtains will fall on the current NPFL season Sunday.

At the weekend, Enugu Rangers won their eighth NPFL championship on the back of a 2-0 home win over Bendel Insurance.

They now have an unassailable 67 points with one round of matches to the end of the season.

‘The Flying Antelopes’ will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League along with the runners-up.

The third-placed team in the league will feature in the CAF Confederation Cup.
