Caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen will be going for goals in today’s 2025 AFCON qualifier in Rwanda and as such he looks set to make changes in the Super Eagles attack.
Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface struggled as top striker against Benin at the weekend and he is most likely to give way in the starting XI.
Victor Osimhen has risen to the defence of Victor Boniface, saying he was “unlucky” against the Cheetahs of Benin.
However, both Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest and Kelechi Iheanacho from Sevilla are now being prepared to replace Victor Boniface.
For the only training the Super Eagles did in Kigali, both Awoniyi and Iheanacho were put through extra drilling by fitness trainer Tomaz Zorec to get them ready for today’s showdown.
Otherwise, Eguavoen is expected to maintain the starting XI from Saturday’s 3-0 win over Benin, while deploying the 3-4-3 formation.
Eguavoen has made it very clear he is gunning for the maximum three points today to put Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON qualification on a firm footing.
“We play to win all the time because Nigerians expect their team to win all the time,” he said.
“And because we have a team with great personnel, we play every team with respect but we don’t get intimidated by any.
“Our objective for the game is the three points.”
