EDITORIAL: Super Eagles it’s victory or nothing in Rwanda

SCORENigeria today charges the Super Eagles to beat hosts Rwanda today so as to revive fading hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite their undoubted quality player-for-player, the Super Eagles have failed to live up to top billing as they did not win their first four qualifying matches on the road to the 2026 World Cup.

A first-ever victory in Kigali today will boost the confidence of the team as well as that of a whole nation leading up to a second qualifier Tuesday in Uyo against bottom team Zimbabwe.

Anything short of this will not do.

Like new coach Eric Chelle has made it very to them, the Super Eagles must chase every ball, they must fight for every space because that is the only way they can restore hope.

They MUST earn their top ratings.

It would be recalled that this is same generation of players that failed to qualify the country to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar three years ago.

It would therefore be most damning if again they will not get across the line for what will be the biggest football feast ever in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico next year.

Captain William Ekong has spoken wisely leading to this must-win tie.

“We can’t change the past, but we have a chance to do better tomorrow,” he declared in the pre-match press briefing Thursday.

The Super Eagles have a second chance to make up for a poor start on the road to the 2026 World Cup with victory today.

They MUST not bungle it.
