Eguavoen demands decision on Super Eagles foreign, prefers local head coach

NFF technical director Augustine Eguavoen has asked that a decision on the appointment of a head coach for the Super Eagles be taken soon because crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers are fast approaching.

He also added that he would prefer an indigenous coach to lead the Super Eagles.

The NFF promised have yet to appoint a foreign coach for the national team since they announced they will do so in June.

Instead, Eguavoen was in temporary charge of the team to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

Eguavoen himself said that they though Nigeria face a difficult task to qualify for the next World Cup after a laboured start, “nothing is impossible”.

The World Cup qualifiers will resume in March 2025.

“All hands must be on deck, we want to try and qualify for the World Cup,” Eguavoen told Kennis FM

“March is just around the corner. If we have to do something (about the team), we need to do it quick.

“That person should come in as quickly as possible, settle down, so that we could speak, tweak things, exchange ideas and talk about the way forward.

“The earlier the better.”

Eguavoen also said he would prefer a local man to be in charge of the World Cup qualifiers.

“We should stay at home (for choice of head coach), but the technical crew has to be enlarged,” he proposed.

“The head coach should be home-grown because we know the situation and we feel the pulse of the people.”
