A top official has admitted the NFF have come under “serious pressure” over the appointment of a new coach for the Super Eagles.
Two months after Finidi George quit as Super Eagles coach and three weeks to an opening 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin, the NFF have yet to fulfill the promise to engage a new coach.
“The NFF are under serious pressure (as regards the appointment of new coach),” the official simply told SCORENigeria
During the recent Paris Olympics, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau said “in a few days” the Super Eagles will have a new coach.
It is understood that in France, Gusau met with preferred choice for the top post Herve Renard, but talks did not go as hoped with the major obstacle being the French coach’s financial demands.
In his initial interactions with the NFF technical committee through his agent, Renard asked for a monthly salary of $180,000.
Eventually, this expectation was lowered to $1.5 Million-a-year.
Also in France, the NFF leadership met with another shortlisted candidate and former Mali coach Eric Chelle.
But in what appeared to be an afterthought, the NFF tabled a contract proposal to the present coach of Philippines, Tom Saintfiet, whose representatives could not meet with the NFF top shots in France.
An agreement appeared to be in place and the appointment of the Belgian coach was to be made public before the government intervened.
It is now left to be seen whether the NFF will go ahead with their choice or wait on orders from the government, which has continued to be the main sponsor of Nigeria football.
