Why Super Eagles didn’t win 1994 World Cup – Ex-star Ezeugo

The Super Eagles ought to have made history by winning the 1994 World Cup on their debut, but according to former international Emeka Ezeugo the best players did not feature in the Round of 16 clash against Italy.

Ten-man Italy fought back from a goal to win 2-1 after extratime to reach the quarterfinal at the expense of Nigeria.

However, Ezeugo said had Clemens Westerhof lined up his best team, the Super Eagles would have gone past Italy on their way to winning the World Cup in the USA.

“That team was supposed to win the World Cup, but Westerhof played the players he wanted to sell,” Ezeugo opened up in a radio interview.

“It was not the best XI on the pitch, the wrong players played and we lost to a 10-man Italy.

“Ninety eight percent of the Super Eagles then Westerhof was their agent.

“Westerhof must sell his players, he sold them all and he made mad money.”

Ezeugo blamed Sunday Oliseh for losing his man Roberto Baggio and that cost Nigeria the knockout game.

“The instruction was him to follow Baggio anywhere he went, did he do 10% of that?” he questioned.

He alleged that he did not enjoy much game time at the World Cup because Westerhof was Oliseh’s agent.

The outspoken Ezeugo maintained that “backdoor players” will not take Nigeria football anywhere.
