U20 AFCON QUALIFIERS: How Flying Eagles can reach semis

Group B of the on-going WAFU B U20 AFCON qualifying tournament is now delicately poised as all three teams – the Flying Eagles, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso – could still qualify for the semifinals Thursday.

Both Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire have three points apiece, while the Flying Eagles are bottom of the standings without any points.

These are some of the options that could lift the Flying Eagles to reach the knockout rounds even though they lost their opening match to Burkina Faso –

  1. Beat Cote d’Ivoire by more than 1-0 Thursday, so 2-0 or even 2-1 will get them through
  2. Beat Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 and hope for the luck of the draw as that would mean all three teams have won and lost 1-0.

In that case, the rules and regulations state the tie breakers will be Goals difference, Goals scored, goals conceded and when any these do not determine the qualified teams, there will be a drawing of lot.

Kick-off Thursday between the Flying Eagles and Cote d’Ivoire is 4pm Nigerian time.
