Super Eagles World Cup rivals Rwanda yet to appoint new coach

Rwanda, who head Super Eagles 2026 World Cup qualifying group, are yet to appoint a new coach with barely weeks to their clash against Nigeria in Kigali.

Rwanda football association, FERWAFA, did not renew the contract of the German Torsten Spittler when it expired in November 2024.

Spittler stayed on until December with the hope of a new contract, while top Rwanda stars begged the federation to hold on to the coach.

In the15 matches under him, Rwanda won seven including beating South Africa 2-0 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier as well as the famous 3-2 win over the Super Eagles in Uyo in a 2025 AFCON qualifier.

The Amavubis also drew four and lost four in Spittler’s year-long stint.

Since 1998, Rwanda have had a staggering 24 coaches, including eight on an interim basis. It’s a ridiculous turnover to say the least.

Of the 16 permanent coaches, only two served beyond two years, while most lasted less than two years in the role.

The Super Eagles will resume their World Cup qualifying campaign next month against Rwanda in Kigali, before they host Zimbabwe in another qualifier.
