Super Eagles stars grumble over AFCON prize money

Several Super Eagles stars who qualified the team to the 2023 AFCON have expressed their disappointment after they were left out from a share of the prize money the team earned by finishing runners-up.

The Super Eagles earned prize money of $4 Million after they were beaten 2-1 in the final of the 2023 AFCON by hosts Cote d’Ivoirein February.

The NFF have since paid each player who made the final squad to the AFCON $30,000.

However, those who did not make it to the tournament but featured in the qualifiers have taken exception to this.

“Some of us did not make it to the AFCON, but we played in the qualifiers,” one of the affected players told only SCORENigeria

“In 2019, the NFF ensured that players like us who didn’t make the final squad to the AFCON, but were involved in the qualifiers also got something from the prize money.”

It is understood that the Super Eagles senior players have discussed the possibility of giving up a percentage of their own earnings, while the NFF also chip in for the players left out.
