Super Eagles put off celebrations until after victory in South Africa

The Super Eagles have paused the celebrations for their first home win in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign until after victory in South Africa Tuesday, according to captain William Ekong.

Tolu Arokodare was the match winner for Nigeria against Rwanda in the 51st minute to revive the Super Eagles hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup.

Ekong said the team will now push on for the next game against group leaders South Africa, who have recorded 16 points from seven matches.

“In the change room there was no celebration,” he revealed.

“Instead, there’s a real desire to keep pushing on.

“We believe in what we’re doing, we never stopped believing.”

The Super Eagles have now climbed to third place in the standings with 10 points and another victory in South Africa will cut the gap with the leaders to three points with two rounds of matches in October.

The Super Eagles will take on Lesotho away, before a final home game against Benin, while Bafana Bafana have an away tie against Zimbabwe before a final home game against Rwanda.
