The Pope’s death was announced on Easter Monday, throwing many people around the world into mourning.
The announcement, made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta, reads:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
How much was Pope Francis’ salary?
As the leader of the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, Pope Francis was surrounded by wealth, but he chose a life of frugality.
According to reports, the late Pope decided he was not going to draw a salary, even though he was entitled to $32,000 (N51 million) salary.
At his death, his salary could be left for a family member, donated to charity or donated back to the church.
This is because the late Pope Francis was a Jesuit who took personal vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience to Christ.
Yet, despite his vow, the late pope is said to be worth $16 million (N25.6 billion), due to the assets associated with his papal office, the Mirror reports.

Man praises Pope Francis’ life of sacrifice
Earlier, TheTalk.NG reported that after the death of Pope Francis, many social media users took to several platforms to mourn the departed church leader.
Many people extolled the good qualities of the late leader of the Vatican, who died at 7:35am on Easter Monday, 2025.
One of those who reacted is a Nigerian Facebook user, Charles Awuzie, who said Pope Francis lived a life of sacrifice.
