Nigerian Musicians’ Love for Private Jets They Don’t Own – Reasons They Travel in Charter Aircraft

  • Nigerian celebrities, especially those in the music industry, are known for their love for private jets, sharing pictures of them up in the sky online
  • Most times, these actions lead to many of their fans and supporters believing they are, in fact, the owners of these private jets
  • From Wizkid to Davido and Burna Boy, TheTalk.NG, in this article, shares the reason behind Nigerian musicians’ love for private jets they don’t own

A private jet or charter aircraft is a sub-niche in the aviation industry meant for people who have the financial resources, a category into which many Nigerian celebrities, especially musicians, fall.

While musicians are not the only ones known for making use of private jets, they are the most flamboyant about it, sharing pictures and videos of them up in the air on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Recently, rumours emerged on social media that Afrobeats singer Wizkid had acquired a private jet. This comes following a series of his colleague and perceived rival Davido posing in ‘his.’

Due to the flamboyant lifestyle musicians pose online, many of their fans are under the assumption that many who fly on private planes personally own them.

However, that is usually not the case. Only a few individuals in Nigeria own private planes, like billionaire Aliko Dangote, Adedeji Adeleke, Bishop David Oyedepo, Allen Onyema, Mike Adenuga, among a few others.

Private jets are expensive to maintain

Apart from the fact that private jets are worth a fortune to acquire, the cost of maintaining and parking aircraft, aside from paying the pilots and cabin crew, are also expensive.

In June 2025, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, grounded about 60 private jets across major airports in Nigeria to recover import duties from some private jet owners in the country, proving that it would be difficult for individuals who are not super rich to own one.

This makes chartering aircraft a booming industry on its own, with private companies putting up aircraft for rent.

Do Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and others own jets?

While there are speculations that Nigerian big three, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, own private jets, there is no confirmation to back it up.

Reports suggest that the jets they fly are chartered or owned by their wealthy families, as in Davido’s case, owned by his billionaire father Adedeji Adeleke.

In 2024, an aviation businessman also cleared the air by tweeting: “Nobody owns a jet in the Nigerian music industry.”

According to the businessman, a co-founder of a private jet charter firm, musicians use charters for air transport. He disclosed that Davido is the only one who stands out, as he flies in his billionaire father Adedeji Adeleke’s jet.

Reason behind musicians’ love for private jets

TheTalk.NG shared some of the possible reasons behind Nigerian musicians’ love for private jets they don’t own. Read them below:

1. Proof of Their Status

Like the industry they find themselves in, show business is everything. Flying a private jet and sharing the pictures online is a way to prove they are successful in their craft. It also segregates them from upcoming musicians and puts them in the class of international stars with repute.

2. For Easy Travel and Convenience

This, perhaps, is one of the reasons famous singers fly private jets or charter one as they can easily travel to different countries for shows. They would not have to stress themselves by waiting at airports to board a flight, which could be delayed or rescheduled.

3. Security and Privacy Reasons

This is another reason to take into consideration as to why musicians fly private jets. Considering their status, it wouldn’t be easy for many of them to walk into airports without being surrounded by fans for pictures. Also, it ensures their movements are kept discrete, safeguarding them from security threats.

4. It might be economically wise

Most top artistes don’t travel alone; there have been cases of Davido being spotted with his crew, which at times could be more than seven people. Also, when booked for shows, many singers have to travel with their dancers, backups, managers, and others. Booking tickets for everyone could equate to chartering an aircraft.

Davido blasts netizen over private jet

Meanwhile, TheTalk.NG reported that Davido was caught up in an online drama over his father’s private jet.

The DMW label boss, in a tweet via his X handle, slammed the troll and gave him an ultimatum of one hour to present apparels to a vehicle owned by his father.

“I GIVE YOU 1 hr … show me ur papa car …1..2..3 go ! One hour and u go show proof .. paper work … ur mouth go finish today !! U are the most useless child any parent can have … if u no show that car in one hour u be b*stard,” Davido tweeted.
