Make sure both your school and program qualify for a PGWP. Check your school’s eligibility here. Confirm your program’s eligibility with the school.

Avoid agents suggesting schools without PGWP, as finding work afterward is challenging. Without a PGWP, you compete for jobs with work-permit holders, making it harder for you.

2. Have enough funds to start your education

Ensure you have money for the initial weeks/months. Legal work starts after your program begins; working before that is not allowed. Having funds for tuition, rent, and expenses in the first term reduces stress. Read about working conditions as a student here.

3. Understand working hours limitations

As a student, you can work 20 hours per week outside school and full time during scheduled breaks. Working inside school doesn’t count towards the 20 hours. Learn more about this here.

4. Changing School/Program after Arrival

You can change school/program after arriving in Canada. Ensure this happens after your arrival and you have a second admission or securing one before entering Canada. Inform IRCC through the IRCC application portal.

Changing school before arrival may require a new study visa application.

5. Renew, Extend, or Change your Status

Stay aware of your visa/permit expiration date. Apply for an extension at least 30 days before expiration. Plan for permanent residency if interested.
