Ndidi, Aribo lined up as Super Eagles ‘emergency central defenders’

Midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Joe Aribo have been named in the Super Eagles final squad for must-win 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe with the added responsibility of also playing in central defence should the need arise.

Ndidi started out as a central defender with the Golden Eaglets and has played that position for his Premier League club Leicester City, while Aribo has recently been deployed on the left side of a three-man defence by his own English club Southampton.

A top source told only SCORENigeria: “Both Ndidi and Aribo are in as midfielders, but the coach has also considered them in central defence should it become necessary.

“Three central defenders led by captain William Ekong made the final cut for the World Cup qualifiers.”
