- Videos from the opening ceremony of the Hushpuppi Cup in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos state have emerged online
- Nigerian singers May D and Small Doctor, as well as BBNaija reality star Hermes Iyele, were among the popular faces spotted at the event
- May D’s performance, however, appeared to gain attention online, with netizens expressing pity for the singer
A football tournament dubbed the Hushpuppi Cup commenced on Monday, September 15, in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos state in grand style.
The event, which was captured on camera, featured live performances from singers May D and Small Doctor, who thrilled fans with their hit songs.
May D’s performance in Lagos gained attention
However, videos from singer May D’s performance have gone viral on social media, stirring concerns from many lovers of Nigerian music.
In the video, May D, who sang his songs, including his popular jam ‘Ile Ijo,’ didn’t get the same energy he gave from the crowd, who looked on as he performed.
Only a handful were seen showing support for the singer, who was once a signee of the defunct music group Psquare.
TheTalk.NG recalls reporting that May D had a similar experience during a live performance in Ile Ife, Osun state, in 2024.
Small Doctor, however, received support from fans, who were seen rallying around the singer and singing his songs word for word.
BBNaija reality star Hermes Iyele was also spotted at the event.
It is, however, unclear if the football tournament is associated with Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, commonly known as Hushpuppi, a Dubai-based Nigerian Instagram influencer, who was sentenced in the United States to 11 years for conspiracy to launder money obtained from business email compromise frauds and other scams.

Mr May D claims he brought Amapiano to Nigeria
Meanwhile, TheTalk.NG reported that Mr May D waded into the origin of the Amapiano genre of music in Nigeria.
While Davido’s fans claimed he was the first to drop an Amapiano song, Mr May D revealed that he was, in fact, the first person to introduce the sound before Davido.
To clear all doubts, May D added that he had awards to back up his claim.
