Enyimba chairman Nwankwo Kanu proved to be the difference when former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye opted for ‘The People’s Elephant’ ahead of NPFL rivals Rivers United.
Ideye has been training with Rivers United before Enyimba hijacked his transfer.
According to Enyimba sports director Ifeanyi Ekwueme, the influence of former Arsenal and Super Eagles great Kanu was crucial to stage this transfer coup.
“We are not just a club but an entity that is synonymous with club football in Nigeria,” Ekwueme said.
“Ideye was training with Rivers United, where our former coach Finidi George was with him, and we were able to bring him here, the power of Enyimba.
“Thanks to our chairman, Kanu Nwankwo, and the management who made it happen, he just gives us the direction and we follow and this signing is one of the results of such direction.”
Ideye will resume with Enyimba Tuesday on a short-term deal.
AFCON champion in 2013, Ideye, 36, has played in the Premier League and the French Ligue 1.
He last played in Kuwait in 2022.
