Go or stay? Eguavoen divides opinion

One of the biggest posers in Nigeria football currently is whether Augustine Eguavoen should continue as Super Eagles coach going into crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March after he delivered the ticket to the 2025 AFCON.

Opinion over the future of ‘Cerezo’ is very much divided with some demanding for his retention, while most would rather want to see his back.

Eguavoen’s former international teammate Mutiu Adepoju said he should continue.

“He should still continue, he has done enough to keep the job,” said Adepoju.

“Like they say, why fix it if it isn’t broken?”

However, those asking for his head have become louder after Rwanda recorded their first-ever win over Nigeria courtesy of 2-1 win in Uyo Monday night.

After a goalless and unentertaining first half, Samuel Chukwueze gave the Super Eagles the opener against the Wasps, but two goals in three minutes including a 75th minute Innocent Nshuti winner did the damage.

Nigerians have been reacting to this loss, and are definitely not taking things lighlty with Eguavoen.

A fan, Isaac Friday, told SCORENigeria: “I am really not surprised we lost, I never expected anything spectacular.

“I have said it countless times, what we need now is a very sound manager( big manager) that will put the players in their place and reduce their over bloated ego and ‘bigmanism’.

“Such manager will be complemented with sound tactician, serious trainer and psychologist. You don’t plant cassava and expect to harvest yam.”

“I maintained that Eguavoen technically and tactically deficient. The team lacked organisation, what a disgraceful performance”. Abdul posted on social media

Opeyemi Akinyode also said: “In over 20yrs around the Super Eagles, what has Eguavoen achieved…I fear for our WORLD CUP TICKET.”

“Twice Eguavoen has failed to qualifier us for WORLD CUP and here we go again.”

“Keep Eguavoen at our peril it’s as simple as this . This is not about bad mouthing or anything like that, but Eguavoen doesn’t look the part and I can bet you anything with Eguavoen we don’t stand a chance at the World Cup qualifiers.” Joel stated via X.

In a rather hilarious comment, Deji Adefila also asked:”Thank you, Augustine Eguavoen.

Can @thenff not hire a white PE teacher next for the @NGSuperEagles, please?”

“This Super Eagles team is too talented to have Eguavoen as manager, no disrespect to him but this is 2024 and not 2006 anymore! His tactical setup is outdated and these guys need a modern tactician,” argued Femi Victor.

The loss to Rwanda marks the end to poor international break as the Super Eagles grabbed only one point out of a possible six.
