Eguavoen counts on 2021 AFCON stars to lift Super Eagles

There are very strong indications that caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen will count on the stars who delivered for him at the 2021 AFCON for the Super Eagles to go past Benin and Rwanda.

The likes of Semi Ajayi, Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi and Moses Simon are therefore guaranteed first-team places beginning with Saturday’s opening 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin.

Moses Simon, for one, was a standout star two years ago operating on the left flank of the attack.

He also featured at the 2023 AFCON, but mainly on the right flank for Ademola Lookman to play on the left.

Eguavoen was in temporary charge of the Super Eagles at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, which was played in 2022.

His Eagles got off to a flying start by winning all three group games playing an exciting attacking football.

However, everything fell apart when a blunder by goalkeeper Maduka Okoye knocked out the team in the Round of 16 for Tunisia to advance.
