CONFIRMED: Ekong Super Eagles captain

The era of Ahmed Musa as Super Eagles captain has ended and enter William Ekong as the substantive leader of the national team.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle will confirm Ekong’s appointment in Rwanda.

Ahmed Musa, 32, is the most capped Nigerian player with 110 caps. He made the provisional squad for the must-win 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, but did not make the final cut.

Ekong, 32, who made his Super Eagles debut in 2015 against Chad in Kaduna, was stand-in captain when Nigeria reached the final of the delayed 2023 AFCON last year in Abidjan.

The Saudi Arabia-based central defender himself said last year that Ahmed Musa remains the Super Eagles skipper and he was only standing in for the Kano Pillars captain.
