Former international Christian Obi has died in a ghastly road crash involving top Nigerian club Heartland.
The Owerri club confirmed the death of the coach, while several players have been hospitalised.
“With sadness in our heart and total submission to the will of God, Heartland FC announce the death of Christian Power Obi, who died on Friday 23rd August, 2024, from a road accident enroute Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Pre-season Tournament,” announced a statement by Heartland.
Coach Obi won promotion for Heartland when he led the club to win the NNL playoffs in Asaba, Delta State, in the 2022-2023 season.
Unfortunately, he was also in charge when the team were relegated from the NPFL this past season.
Speculations are rife they will play in the NPFL in the new season, which kicks off August 31, by buying the slot of Beyond Limits Academy.
