Club Brugge coach defends Onyedika red card shock

After Bright Osayi-Samuel, Raphael Onyedika became the latest Super Eagles player to be sent off this week in a disappointing turn of events.

Fifty seven minutes into Club Brugge Belgian Jupiler Pro League game against Charleroi, Onyedika was sent off for a reckless challenge, but both his coach and team captain have deemed the red card decision “harsh”.

“He had no intention of hitting the player. He went for the ball. It was a very harsh decision,” said Club Brugge coach Nicky Hayen.

His captain Hans Vanaken also stood by Onyedika.

“That is never a red card. Yes, he goes in hard, but not with the studs on the ankle. That was not a dangerous action and he also touches the ball. It is not that he hits him full on the ankle or the foot. I think yellow was certainly enough.”

Onyedika is now set to miss Brugge next three games, including Union St Gilloise next week, and ties against Westerlo and Anderlecht after the international break.
