CHAN Eagles coach insists Ghana won’t stop Nigeria from CHAN again

Stand-in coach of the CHAN Eagles, Daniel Ogunmodede, has promised the team will end a poor run against arch-rivals Ghana so as to qualify for the 2024 CHAN.

Nigeria held hosts Ghana to a 0-0 draw in Accra Sunday and both teams clash again today in Uyo with the ticket to the 2024 CHAN in East Africa in February the prize for the overall winners.

Ghana eliminated Nigeria from the 2009 and 2022 CHANs.

However, Ogumodede was adamant the poor run of the home-based Eagles against Ghana has come to an end.

“Ghana’s basic strength is history (against us), they rely so much on history and we will ensure that history does repeat itself with us,” he said.

“Whatever yoke, we will break.

“We want to qualify for CHAN.”

In Ghana, the CHAN Eagles were solid in defence, but offered very little upfront.

Ogunmodede has since boosted the team by drafting two strikers – Samuel Ayanrinde (Shooting Stars), Stephen Megwo (Abia Warriors) as well as central midfielder Kazeem Ogunleye (Enugu Rangers) – who did not make the trip to Ghana.

“We’re relaxed and we know the task ahead,” further assured CHAN Eagles captain Nduka Junior.

“We will give our best.

“We wish to improve our profile and that of our league.

“Like the coach said, history won’t repeat itself with us.”

Kick-off today inside the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo is 5pm.
