It was a gloomy evening for Nigeria’s sole representatives in the CAF Women’s Champions League as Edo Queens suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of Congolese champions TP Mazembe.
The Queens will now compete in a bronze medal match, while also going home with over 500 Million Naira in prize money for reaching the semifinals.
The Edo Queens side looking to make the final of the competition against all odds, but just fell short at the death.
The Nigerian champions took the lead in the 65th minute through an Emem Essien lob over the goalkeeper, and looked to seal a 1-0 win but it was not to be.
Late into the game, Marveille Kanjinga headed home from a set piece situation to draw the Congolese side level and take the game to extra time, before Comfort Folorunsho’s own goal gave them the lead in the 101st minute.
TP Mazembe’s Wivine Makassi was brought to the ground 104 minutes into the game, in the penalty area and after a lengthy VAR check, a penalty was awarded and converted by Marlene Kasaj Yav to ensure the game was dead and buried.
There was no way back any longer for the Edo Queens this time.
