SCORENigeria has been told there are moves for Victor Osimhen to be named as one of the assistant captains of the Super Eagles.
As first reported by SCORENigeria, William Ekong is the substantive skipper of the Super Eagles under new coach Eric Chelle after he was stand-in captain in the absence of the record capped Ahmed Musa.
FC Nantes winger Moses Simon has been one of the assistant captains as one of the most senior players in the squad, while Kenneth Omeruo was another, but the experienced central defender has been out of the national team setup since the 2023 AFCON due to injury and limited game time in Turkey.
Osimhen, who is now one of the senior players in the team having made his full international debut in June 2017, has led by example in the Eric Chelle era as Super Eagles coach.
He was one of the first players to report to training camp in Rwanda and has already cautioned his teammates that the former Mali coach will be “very, very demanding” after he spoke with him recently.
“The new coach is counting a lot on Osimhen because he believes he can get the rest of the players in line for the team to achieve,” a team official told SCORENigeria
“There’s already a bond between the coach and the player. They are both fighters.”
Osimhen has emerged as one of the leaders of the team even without any official recognition, he’s outspoken in the dressing room, enjoys a good relationship with the NFF leadership and his commitment to the national cause is well documented.
