Akwa United the shock result of the NPFL weekend after they defeated Enyimba 2-1 in Uyo, while title challengers Rivers United returned to winning ways courtesy of a late winner against Lobi Stars.
Coach Kennedy Boboye got his first win on his return to Akwa United and it was against nine-time champions Enyimba.
Olayemi Ogunleye put home team Akwa United ahead after 28 minutes, before Enyimba leveled the scores in the 40th minute through Issah Mohammed.
Uche Sebastian was the match winner for ‘The Promise Keepers’ when he hit target in the 75th minute.
Akwa United thus climbed to 18th position with 23 points from as many games.
They are now two points from safety.
Lobi Stars, on the other hand, dropped to rock bottom in the standings after they fell at Rivers United.
However, it was a hard-fought home win for Rivers as they had to wait until the 88th minute for Timothy Zachariah to conjure the winning goal.
Rivers United are now third on the table with 38 points from 23 matches, 10 points adrift of leaders Remo Stars.
Abia Warriors cruised to a 3-0 home win over Sunshine Stars, while Niger Tornadoes and Bayelsa United were held to draws at home.
Niger Tornadoes played out a 1-1 draw with Plateau United and Bayelsa United recorded a barren draw with defending champions Enugu Rangers.
