NFF ‘totally confused’ over new Super Eagles coach

All is not well at the NFF over the appointment of a new coach for the Super Eagles with less than three weeks to an opening 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin in Uyo.

Several inside sources told SCORENigeria that the NFF leadership is still negotiating with a fresh choice for the top post amid lack of harmonious working relationship on the NFF technical committee.

“They are totally confused,” one source told SCORENigeria

“The task of appointing a new coach has overwhelmed the NFF leadership.”

NFF technical director Augustine Eguavoen may have assured after the technical committee meeting in Abuja, which ran for two days, that a new coach will be appointed by the end of the new week, but there is still a lot of ground to cover before this will be achieved.

The meeting itself was called at very short notice which caused the absence of notable committee members like NFF 1st vice president Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who is also the vice-chairman of the committee, Victor Ikpeba and Aminu Kurfi Balele.

Despite his experience with transfers local and international while he was the most successful chairman of Enyimba, Anyansi has been relegated to the background in the search for a new coach for the Super Eagles.

He is currently in the United States of America, unconnected with what is going on back home despite his office and experience.

Kurfi, a prominent promoter of the present NFF administration, has also been far from impressed with how this matter of Super Eagles coach is being handled.

Former African Footballer of the Year Ikpeba, a long-standing member of the committee, was equally absent from this last meeting.

A top official previously likened the secrecy around the search of a new coach to what obtains in a cult as most key officials have not been carried along at crucial stages of the selection process.
