A serious accident involving multiple vehicles on the N2 southbound at Esperanza, south of Umzinto, in KwaZulu-Natal, left more than a dozen people injured on Saturday afternoon.
Heavy smoke from a grass fire neighbouring the N2 freeway decreased visibility, causing the collision, according to reports from the scene.

Truck accident kills one, several others injured
Elsewhere, a multiple-vehicle accident involving a truck killed one person and injured several others on the N3 near the Peter Brown interchange in Pietermaritzburg on Friday night.
A truck carrying chemicals lost control and collided with the oncoming traffic barrier. Chemicals spilt across the freeway, causing traffic congestion and extensive delays in the southbound direction on the N3.
Paramedics also found a light motor vehicle between the medium and fast lanes on the northbound N3 carriageway. However, the cause of the accident was unclear.

Two killed, four injured in accident on N2 Umlazi bridge
Meanwhile, the N2 Umlazi bridge claimed the lives of two people, injuring four others, following a bakkie crash in October last year.
Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the vehicle ejected two people seated in the back in the collision.
“The impact from the crash threw one person off the bridge and onto the railway line meters below the roadway. Emergency responders found the other person lying in the roadway. Both suffered fatal injuries and were declared dead on the scene.”
